When you work a forge, heat and flying scale come with the territory, so our leather blacksmith aprons stand between you and the fire. Heavy leather chars instead of melting, shrugs off sparks and hot scale, and takes the abrasion of hammer work without wearing through. Smiths have trusted leather at the forge for generations, and we've made leather blacksmith aprons for US smiths, farriers and knifemakers since 2017.

Built for forge heat

Our Ironhide blacksmith apron is cut from full-grain leather around 1.6 mm thick, with reinforced seams at the points that take the most strain. The deep black finish hides soot and scale marks, and the full cut covers you from chest to knee so sparks land on leather, not on you. The Emberhide is a lighter heat-resistant option for smiths who want more freedom of movement. Either way, this is a heat resistant blacksmith apron made to take what the forge throws at it.

Room for hammers and tongs

A forge apron is only useful if your tools ride with you. The Ironhide has a zippered chest pocket for small essentials and dual lower compartments sized for hammers and tongs, plus a hook-through waist belt that keeps it steady while you swing. The Emberhide keeps a roomy zippered pocket for the bits you reach for most. Every product page lists the exact pockets, finish and sizing, with real customer reviews.

How thick should a blacksmith apron be?

For forge work, a leather blacksmith apron in the region of 1.5 to 2.5 mm hits the balance most smiths want: thick enough to block scale, sparks and the odd knock, but still flexible enough to move in. Our Ironhide sits around 1.6 mm full-grain, which holds up to anvil work day in, day out.

Full-grain or split-grain?

Blacksmith aprons come in both. Split-grain is cheaper and a touch lighter; full-grain is denser, more abrasion-resistant and ages better. We build ours from full-grain hide because that is what lasts at the forge, and it develops a patina with use instead of wearing thin.

How to choose a leather blacksmith apron

A few things worth weighing up before you buy.

  • Coverage. A full chest-to-knee cut keeps scale and sparks off your legs at the anvil.
  • Hide. Thicker full-grain leather, around 1.6 mm, takes more heat and abrasion before it shows wear.
  • Seams. Reinforced stitching at the stress points so heavy tools don't pull a pocket loose.
  • Pockets. Compartments sized for hammers and tongs, and a zip pocket for small parts.
  • Fit. Adjustable straps and a waist belt you can set so the apron stays put.

Leather or canvas at the forge?

Canvas scorches, catches stray sparks and burns through fast near a forge. Heavy leather chars on the surface and keeps going, which is why smiths have relied on it for generations. If you also weld or grind, our leather welding aprons are built the same heavy-duty way, and plenty of smiths keep one of our leather woodworking aprons for bench work away from the heat.

Looking after your blacksmith apron

Brush off scale, wipe it with a damp cloth and let it dry away from the forge, never on it. Work in a little leather conditioner now and then so the hide stays supple. It darkens and patinas with use, which only adds to it.

Blacksmith apron questions

Is leather good for blacksmithing?

Yes. A good leather blacksmith apron is naturally heat and flame resistant and chars instead of melting, so it shields you from sparks and hot scale at the forge. It is protective gear, not fireproof, so wear it with your other PPE.

How thick should a blacksmith apron be?

Around 1.5 to 2.5 mm is the usual range. Ours sit near 1.6 mm full-grain, thick enough to protect and still easy to move in.

Full-grain or split-grain?

Both exist; we use full-grain because it is denser, lasts longer and ages better than split-grain.

Does it suit farriers?

It does. The full coverage and tough hide make it a solid farrier apron as well as a forge apron.

What sizes do you offer?

Small through 2XL, with adjustable straps.

How do I clean it?

Brush off debris, wipe with a damp cloth, dry away from heat and condition occasionally. Don't soak it.
