<div class="ltr-faq ltr-faq-sections"></div>Here are the questions we get asked most about our leather aprons, grouped so you can jump straight to what you need. If your question isn’t here, contact us and we’ll help.
The Basics
A leather apron protects the front of your body and your clothes from heat, sparks, stains, sharp tools and spills while you work. It takes the punishment so your shirt and skin don’t have to.
Welders, blacksmiths, farriers, pitmasters, chefs, line cooks, butchers, woodworkers, carpenters, bartenders, baristas, barbers and stylists. Pretty much anyone who works with heat, blades, tools or mess and wants their clothes to last.
Cloth soaks up grease and smells, frays and wears out in a season. Leather wipes clean, shrugs off heat and sparks, and lasts for years. You buy one good leather apron instead of replacing cloth ones over and over.
If you work in yours, yes. Leather breaks in, softens to your body and looks better with age. For light occasional use a cheap cloth apron is fine, but for real daily work leather pays for itself in how long it lasts.
Yes. Our aprons run Small to 2XL with adjustable neck and waist straps, so the same cut fits a wide range of bodies. Set the straps once and you’re good.
Sizing and fit
Every apron runs from Small to 2XL with adjustable straps, so you can fine tune the fit. Each product page lists its own sizing.
Go by your chest and waist and check the size note on the product page. The adjustable straps give you room either way, so most people land on a comfortable fit easily.
Yes. Most of our aprons use crossback or neck and waist straps with buckles, sliders or rivets, so you can set the length to your body and keep it there all shift.
Most cuts cover you from the chest down past the waist to around the knee or mid thigh, depending on the style. The exact coverage is listed on each product page.
As long as it’s unworn and in its original condition, you can return it within 30 days. If you’re unsure about fit before ordering, email us and we’ll help you pick.
Many people find them so. Crossback straps spread the weight across your shoulders instead of pulling on your neck, which helps on long days. Several of our aprons use this style.
Materials and leather
Genuine cowhide, many in full grain leather. Each product page states the exact material and finish so you know what you’re getting.
Full grain is the top layer of the hide with its natural surface left intact. It’s the densest, most hard wearing part of the leather, it resists abrasion well, and it ages into a nice patina instead of wearing thin.
It varies by apron, and heavier trades get heavier hide. Many of our work aprons sit around 1.6 to 2.0 mm, thick enough to block sparks, scale and knocks while still letting you move. The product page lists the detail where it applies.
Depending on the style you’ll find tan, brown, chestnut, charcoal and black, often with contrast stitching. Each product page shows the actual colors for that apron.
Yes. We use riveted straps and solid metal or brass buckles and hooks, so loaded pockets and daily adjusting don’t pull things loose.
Real genuine cowhide, not bonded scraps and not plastic PU. That’s the point. Real hide is what gives you the heat resistance, the toughness and the patina that fake leather can’t match.
Heat, flame and safety
Our welding, blacksmith and BBQ aprons are heat and flame resistant for work near sparks and heat. Leather chars instead of melting, so it won’t stick to your skin the way synthetic fabric can.
No, and we’ll never claim that. They’re protective gear that resists heat and flame, not a fireproof suit. Always wear yours with the rest of your proper PPE.
For hot, sparky work you want heavy leather, usually around 1.5 to 2 mm or more. Thicker hide takes more spatter and radiant heat before it shows wear, while slightly thinner hide moves a little more freely.
Leather handles spatter far better than cloth. Over time you’ll see honest marks and patina, not holes burned straight through. Just brush off slag and scale after the job.
Leather is heavier than cloth, but good cowhide breathes better than plastic coated fabric, and the adjustable straps keep the weight balanced. Most people get used to it quickly and like the protection.
Care and cleaning
Wipe it down with a damp cloth, let it dry away from direct heat, and rub in a little leather conditioner now and then. That’s the whole routine. No laundry needed.
No. Never machine wash or soak leather, it will stiffen, crack and lose shape. Spot clean with a damp cloth instead, and use a leather cleaner for stubborn marks.
Every couple of months is plenty for most people, or whenever the hide starts to feel dry. Conditioning keeps it supple and helps it last for years.
Wipe fresh spills as they happen so nothing sets in. For stubborn spots use a cleaner made for leather, work it in gently, then let it dry naturally away from heat.
Yes, and that’s normal. Leather softens and develops a patina with use. It’s a sign of age and character, not a defect.
Hang it or lay it flat in a dry spot away from direct sun and heat. Avoid leaving it crumpled or damp, which can mark the hide.
Choosing the right apron for your trade
Look at our leather welding aprons. They use heavy hide and full chest to knee coverage to block sparks, spatter and radiant heat at the bench.
Our leather blacksmith aprons are built for forge heat, with thick full grain hide, reinforced seams and room for hammers and tongs. They suit farriers too.
Yes. Our leather BBQ aprons handle grill heat and grease, wipe clean fast, and carry your tongs, thermometer and a towel.
Our leather cooking aprons resist heat, oil and stains and wipe clean instead of going in the wash. They suit chefs, line cooks and home cooks.
Yes. Our leather butcher aprons are cut and stain resistant, wipe clean for hygiene, and include knife and scissor storage.
Our leather woodworking aprons use heavy abrasion resistant hide with deep tool pockets for chisels, a pencil and a tape, and they outlast canvas.
We do. Our leather bartender aprons shrug off spills and carry bar tools with brass fittings, and our leather barber aprons stay light and sharp with room for clippers, combs and scissors.
Customization and bulk orders
Not at the moment. Our aprons ship exactly as shown on the product page. The upside is the leather takes on its own character and patina as you wear it, so each one becomes yours over time.
We currently sell the colors and sizes listed on each product page and don’t make to order. The adjustable straps and Small to 2XL range fit most people well.
If you need several aprons for a shop, restaurant, bar or team, email us at support@leathron.com and we’ll see what we can do for a larger order.
It makes a great gift for the welder, griller, cook, woodworker, bartender or barber in your life. It gets used constantly and ages well, and the Small to 2XL range with adjustable straps takes the guesswork out of fit.
